aftermint

Coffee. Wine. Pastries. Late-night snacks.

The things we enjoy every day can contribute to enamel erosion, plaque buildup, and cavity-causing bacteria.

VIII Aftermints were designed for the moments after.

Sugarfree.
100% xylitol sweetened.
Moderately minted.

Enjoying xylitol after meals and drinks may help reduce harmful oral bacteria, support saliva production, and promote a healthier oral environment.

The bare minimum —
for better oral health.

What is xylitol?

Xylitol, a five-carbon sugar polyol, is found naturally in fruit, vegetables, and berries and can be manufactured from from xylan-rich plant materials such as birch and corn.(NIH)

It is a low-calorie sweetener with a 1/3 less calories than other sugars.

Xylitol has a low glycemic impact with a glycemic index (GI) of ~7 compared to regular sugar which has a GI of 60. With no rapid spikes in blood sugar or insulin levels, it is considered to be diabetic-friendly. (Harvard Health Publishing)

How does xylitol work?

Xylitol reduces the levels of mutans streptococci (MS, Streptococcus mutans) in plaque and saliva by disrupting their energy production processes which ultimately leads to cell death. Xylitol cannot be fermented by cavity-causing bacteria thusly reducing plaque and preventing tooth decay. It works to reduce the adhesion of these microorganisms to the teeth surface and also reduces their acid production potential.(NIH)

Reducing acid production is essential because the ideal pH of the mouth is around 7.0, which is slightly neutral. At this pH, the mouth can maintain healthy and stable conditions.

Acidic pH (under 7.0) makes the mouth more susceptible to dental decay, bad breath and periodontitis (inflammation of the gum that can lead to soft tissue and bone loss).

On the other hand, an overly alkaline pH of over 7.6 accelerates how quickly plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria film) turns into tartar (calculus). Tartar is the hardened, calcified plaque that binds to your teeth like cement.(NIH)

How long has xylitol been used for oral care?

Xylitol has been known for about a century but was formally researched for its effectiveness on dental plaque reduction since 1970. This study took place in Turku, Finland. It is widely researched and globally accepted.(NIH)

More about Xylitol

1

FDA Approved

The FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) permits the use of xylitol, a sugar alcohol, as a sugar substitute.(FDA)

2

ADHA Approved

The ADHA (American Dental Hygienists’ Association) supports the use of xylitol as a part of preventive strategies aimed at reducing dental caries.(adha.org)

3

AAPD Approved

The AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recognizes xylitol and the potential benefits for oral health for infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs.(AAPD)

4

Remineralization of Enamel Crystals

Xylitol stimulates saliva flow which is rich in calcium and phosphate. This allows for the remineralization of the teeth with significant remineralization within 3 weeks.(NIH)

How to use

1

Ideally take 6-10g of Xylitol a day

This should be spaced out between 3-6 times throughout the day. After meals or drinks, swish your mouth with some water and pop a mint or two in your mouth. Let it dissolve for a minute or so.

Saliva is what remineralizes the teeth so allowing your teeth to have a longer time with increased flow is beneficial.

Aftermints can be used at night before sleeping to help with dry mouth.

Please note

1

For those with dog friends & family, please remember:

Just as chocolate & grapes are toxic to our dogs and dangerous to our pets,
Xylitol is also toxic to dogs.
Please, for the love of all things good and great,
Keep all xylitol products away from dogs and pets.

If you think your pet has consumed xylitol, contact your veterinarian, an emergency animal clinic, or an animal poison control center immediately.(ASPCA)

Those with cardiovascular disease should consult a physician before consuming regularly.

Though it is said that adults can safely take 40g of xylitol a day, xylitol may cause gut issues or diarrhea when excessively consumed. Please remember that only 6-10g of xylitol needs to be taken a day for oral care benefits.
